Are You at Risk for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a common medical condition in which a buildup of plaque makes it difficult for blood to circulate through the arteries. PAD primarily affects the legs but can also damage arteries in the kidneys, abdomen, feet, ankles, pelvis, hips, buttocks, and arms. When left untreated, PAD can lead to serious complications including heart attack and stroke.

  • PAD affects 8-12 million people in the United States
  • The risk of PAD increases dramatically with age
  • One in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 has PAD

Diagnosing PAD

Early diagnosis is key. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, a detailed medical history, and various diagnostic tests including ankle brachial index (ABI) and duplex arterial ultrasound. Testing is available in Wallingford, Glastonbury, Hartford, and Avon.

Treating PAD

PAD treatment typically involves a combination of lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, procedures or surgery. Surgery may include inserting a stent to open or bypass the blocked artery. Treatments aim to improve blood flow to the extremities, reduce symptoms, and prevent complications.
